SSD Raid vs HDD Raid vs Single SSD

If you are building a new PC or even upgrading your disk space on an existing PC, you may be wondering about RAID for HDDs or SSDs.  You may also be wondering how a single SSD compares to RAID. In this post, we will compare the 3 options of SSD Raid, HDD Raid, and a singe SSD when it comes to personal use. This post won’t go into Raid for servers or mission critical situations.

Single SSD vs HDD Raid

If you are comparing a single SSD to a RAID 0 HDD setup, which is faster? This is probably the biggest question that most computer enthusiasts are wondering about. After quite a bit of research, I kept finding that the single SSD drive was quite a bit faster than the HDD raid 0 setup. Most benchmarks show the single SSD being somewhere around 50-100% faster than the RAID 0 HDDs. To go along with this, many of these benchmarks were from a few years ago or at least a year ago. This is important because SSDs continue to get faster and faster while HDDs have pretty much been the about same speed for awhile now. So, when it comes to speed, the single SSD wins. read more

What Makes SSD Laptops Different from Other Laptops?

An SSD – or solid-state drive – used to cost thousands of dollars when it first became commercially available, and its capacity at the time was within a now-measly range of 512 Kb to 2 Mb. Who would’ve thought that SSD capacity would eventually reach terabyte levels, its prices would drop, and it would find its way inside laptops? You may ask though: What makes SSD laptops different from other ones that contain hard disk drives?

  1. An SSD laptop performs faster than an HDD one.

You may find yourself getting frustrated with your HDD laptop too often an HDD laptop it takes too long to boot. Your frustration escalates after opening a handful of applications, each of which takes more than ten seconds before you can use them. Any games you’ve installed in your HDD laptop may also be prone to low FPS (or frames per second) that playing one feels like watching a flip book transition in slow motion even if you have a good graphics card that should render images faster. read more

Best List of SSD Hard Drives – The Top 5!

This post looks at the best list of SSD hard drives for the money. As you may already know, SSD hard drive technology is a huge upgrade over the standard SATA hard drive. Even the slowest of the SSDs are 100s of percent faster than an HDD when it comes to read/write speeds. One great tip to really speed up an older computer is to add an SSD and then reinstall Windows on this drive. If reinstalling Windows is not possible, even moving the page file over to an SSD can really help performance. Let’s dig right into the best SSDs. read more

Seagate Switches Focus to 3rd-Gen Hybrid Drive Production

Hybrid drives are storage solutions that provide the best of both worlds: The speed of solid state drives and the capacity of hard disk drives. They work by relegating all the most frequently accessed files to the SSD portion, while the rest of the data is stored on the HDD side.

While most computer companies prefer SSDs for their laptops, there is still something to be said for the high storage volume of HDDs (not to mention the fact that SSDs aren’t exactly the cheapest laptop parts around). To address the question of improved performance vis-a-vis high capacity, disk drive manufacturers sought two alternatives for their consumers. read more
